Billows families seem to predominate in the Dorset area of England in the 1700s after which many branches of Dorset families migrated to London, Lancashire, Hampshire and Essex. The origin of the name is uncertain, although there are suspicions that it derived from a French version of the name - possibly Billot / Beaulieu. Most descendents recall family stories of French origin. It is also possible that the name is connected to the surname BYLES or BILES. Occasionally, the Billows name is transcribed as BELLOWS and vice versa in the same family. The BILLOWES spelling is predominant in the families from the Isle of Wight who also originated from Dorset. |
