Possibly adopted by William Austin 1824 Sometime in 1849, Jonathan married Mrs. Lucinda Shipman Callahan. Lucinda had been married to Thomas Callahan who also marched with The Battalion. However, when they were mustered out, about fifty of the soldiers re-enlisted and stayed in the San Diego area. Thomas was among that number. The family tradition of her family says that she thought that Thomas was dead or that he did not intend to return at all so she asked Brigham Young for permission to marry Jonathan. Actually, Thomas eventually returned to Utah after working twelve years in California. He remarried and died a faithful member of the Church. In any case, Lucinda was a well respected midwife and had traveled to The Valley with the Willard Richards
BIRTH: Nauvoo Temple Endowment Register 1845-46 (23 Dec 1822); Patron Section FGS- Margaret Callahan Eckersley (23 Dec 1823 see note reference: Adoption by William AUSTIN); (Early Church Members- Susan W. Easton: "FGS by spouse" shows Lucinda's parents: Daniel SHIPMAN/Olive LEE); TIB EH 1491 bk A p 54; Arch Rec Euroca Brimhall DICKSON; Family Record of Sarah J. R. Campbell and Margaret Callahan Eckersley, Ogden, Utah. Birthplace also listed as Athens, Leeds, Ontario, Canada. Lynn Ransom Burton 1994, Brigham City, Utah: (2 endowment dates 7 Feb 1846 and 15 Sep 1852) "2 fathers listed for Lucinda- William Austin and Daniel Shipman; she is often listed as Lucinda Austin and also as Lucinda Shipman. Some family members, especially the late Verna R. Sederholm, collector of genealogy for Ransom and Austin families, did not accept Lucinda as a child of William Austin at all. Some insist that Daniel Shipman was Lucinda's father. Lucinda's first child, Alma Austin Callahan was raised by William Austin as "Alma Austin". Thomas William Callahan deserted Lucinda and family, so Lucinda and her children were sealed to her 2nd husband, Jonathan Campbell (wife sealed 15 Sep 1852 Salt Lake Temple, children sealed 18 Jun 1924). The date in our records for Lucinda's sealing to William Austin is 12 Dec 1934, but not verified by [Utah] Gen[ealogical] Soc[iety], and she has been cleared at Ogden Temple." NOTE 2: From Juanita Bitton, Swan Valley, Idaho- jbitton@silverstar.com (June 2000) "Have you ever been to Park Valley or Rosette, Utah? They are located in the far northwest corner of Utah. We went several years ago - the year of the 150th celebration of the LDS Church. There isn't even a post office at Rosette anymore, but we did find the old... and visited with the old man who owns it now. We asked if there had ever been a written history, and found out there were actually three of them. We visited with the wife of the author of the first one - and she, incidentally, was the oldest living person who was actually born in Rosette. She had recently had a stroke and wasn't very lucid, but her son and daughter-in-law sent us to the Post Mistress in Park Valley, where we hit real pay dirt. She had two of the three history's available, and the third was at the printers. I paid for all three right then, and she mailed me the third when it was finished. The one titled "PARK VALLEY, UTAH 1976" is the one telling about Lucinda, Jonathan and Helaman coming there in 1871. It also said that Andrew Callahan was already living there, as well as Levi Campbell, and that William Callahan (her ex-husband) came later. Recently I found that Lucinda & Jonathan's oldest daughter, Lucinda Phebe, was married to Levi Campbell and they had a large family, but she divorced him and married John Nef. one of two of the children called themselves "Nef", but they were all born while she was still married to Levi. Another daughter, Rhoda Ann, lived to be 13 before dying in Malad, Idaho. I wondered why they were so far north but she died in 1871, and they must have been on their way to Park Valley - I've been told there is a 2 CONT? Got an answer to my question of the divorce between Jonathan and Lucinda today from the records office in the Weber County Court House, and they could find NO record of a divorce, although the one for Lucinda Phebe and Levi Campbell is there. IF she did divorce him could it have been in Box Elder County? I'm more confused now than ever!"
